What is Pilates?

Developed by Joseph Pilates, it is a mind-body method of exercise which takes the best of eastern and western techniques, strengthening the deep core postural muscles, abdominals and back muscles to improve body alignment and correct imbalances of strength. It is widely practised by dancers and sports professionals to enhance their performance.

I was suffering from constant hamstring injuries, resulting in 3 tears in 10 months.  With nothing else working, my physio suggested pilates.  I started a course of 1 to 1 sessions.  Since then I have felt a definite improvement in my hamstring strength and flexibility and have managed a full season without hamstring injury.

During a year of enforced inactivity at a British POW camp, Joseph Pilates refined his beliefs in health and physical fitness and, with his fellow inmates as guinea-pigs, started devising a series of exercise combining physical fitness with mental activity and control of breathing to build core physical strength and flexibility.  In the years that followed, Joseph continued to develop his ideas and became more widely known, eventually settling in the dance district of New York.
